The original College of Henricopolis was founded in Virginia in 1618 and was the first institution of higher education in Anglophone America. Its resurrection as an innovative allopathic (M.D-granting) medical school dedicated to inter-ethnic education and empirical science recalls its founding principles. The Company (CHSM) was chartered July 3, 2013 as a benefit corporation in Virginia with goals of revolutionizing medical education by instituting inquiry-based, active, narrative-learning instruction built around a curriculum of integrative biology. Goals include educating doctors from historically disadvantaged populations, providing early clinical experience by involvement in community medicine, emphasizing preventive and environmental medicine, and focusing on output of primary care physicians. CHSM partners with the nonprofit Integrative Centers for Science and Medicine for research, education, and clinical service.
